History: Apache is one of our biggest ponies. He is a ‘Pony of America’ which is a welsh pony and appaloosa horse cross.
Although Apache may look like a Dalmatian dog, he is called a leopard appaloosa, because of his distinctive, evenly spotted coat.
April

History: April was born at the Happy Day Ranch on bright April morning (original name, don’t you think?)
April’s mother was a very small pony, so as you can see, she is pretty small too. Although she is one of the smallest, April has no problem establishing her place in the herd (especially at eating time).
On January 29, 2005 April had her first baby, a little filly named Daisy.
Buddy
Breed: Shetland Pony

Color: Bay
Weight: 600 lbs.
History: Buddy joined the pony ride crew along with his friend Bell from a ranch near Ventura, CA.
Buddy is a very special pony. Even though he is not very tall, he is very strong. Look at his heavy neck.
On the ranch, Buddy pretends to be one of the tough guys. But at the pony ride he’s as gentle as a lamb.
Ducky
Breed: Welsh Pony
Born: 1999
Sex: Gelding
Color: Paint
Weight: 650 lbs.
Height: 48 inches
History: Ducky (what a crazy name for a pony), is from wwwaaayyy back in the Mid-West. We were very happy when Ducky came to Trail’s End Ranch.
Chance spent many hours teaching Ducky how to be a good pony ride pony. Now we think he is one of our best ponies, especially for our older riders.
Franky
Breed: Shetland Pony
Born: 1996
Sex: Gelding
Color: Paint
Weight: 425 lbs.
Height: 38 inches or 9-3 hands
History: Franky is probably our most recognized pony, because of his height and his markings along with his blue eyes.
Franky has a very independent personality and will stand up to any of the other ponies.
We are so happy he made to trip to Trail’s End Ranch with his friends from Arkansas in 2004.
Frostie
Breed: Welsh Pony
Born: 1990
Sex: Gelding
Color: White
Weight: 750 lbs.
Height: 47 inches or 11-3 hands
History: We found Frostie on a ranch near Ventura, CA.
Frostie is a great size for most of our riders. And with his beautiful white coat is a favorite of the cowboys and cowgirls that visit us at the fairs.
As with all white ponies, Frostie seems to always need a bath.
Ginger
Breed: Welsh Pony
Born: 1993
Sex: Mare
Color: Brown/White Pinto
Weight: 625 lbs.
Height: 46 inches or 11-2 hands
History: Ginger was born May 10, 1993, just one week after her friend Toy.
Ginger and Toy have grown-up together and are the best of friends, but they have very different personalities. Ginger loves attention and is very gentle; Toy on the other hand is frisky and independent.
Goldie
Breed: Shetland Pony
Born: 1995
Height: 46 inches or 11-2 hands
History: In May of 1998, Goldie gave birth to a bouncing baby boy named Smokey (he was as grey as smoke).
February of 2003 Goldie blessed us with a beautiful baby girl (filly). Ruby’s color is from both parents. She has her mother’s sorrel color and her dad’s appaloosa spots.
Goldie loves Trail’s End Ranch. When she isn’t working she runs and bucks all around the pastures with the rest of the herd.
Lil’ Joe
Breed: Welsh Pony
Born: 1984
Sex: Gelding
Color: Sorrel
Weight: 625 lbs.
Height: 47 inches or 11-3 hands
History: Lil’ Joe came to us with several of his friends from Yosemite Park, where they worked on the trail ride. Lil’ Joe has a stocky build, which makes him very strong for his size.
Notice the white number on Lil’ Joe’s shoulder? This is a freeze brand, used for identification in Yosemite Park.
King

Height: 51 inches or 12-3 hands
History: King is truly king of the pasture. With his size and intelligence he has shown a talent for opening even the most secure gates (much to our dismay).
King joined the pony ride in 1996, from Santa Paula, CA. As you can see, he is our biggest pony and is usually asked for by our older riders.
Nikki
Breed: Shetland Pony

Height: 46 inches or 11-2 hands
History: Nikki traveled to the Happy Day Ranch from wwwaayyy back in the Mid-West with is buddy Mouse.
Nikki quickly adapted to the pony ride life and became best friends with Buddy. Nikki and Buddy look very much alike, and sometimes we almost mix them up. (I think they try to play tricks on us).
Penny
Breed: Welsh Pony
Born: 1988

Color: Roan
Weight: 700 lbs.
Height: 54 inches or 13-2 hands
History: Penny came to Trail’s End Ranch all the way from Arkansas. The children got too big to ride Penny, so they asked us if we could give her a good home with plenty of love and attention. We said sure!
When Penny was in Arkansas she won many ribbons for being a great reining pony. Congratulations Penny!
Pokey
Breed: Shetland Pony

Color: Silver Dapple

History: Pokey is from Watsonville, CA. After a short training period he fell right into step with the pony ride routine.
When Pokey is at the pony ride he likes to walk very slowly, (I think he likes to save his energy for playing tag when it’s time to come in from the pasture).
Rusty
Breed: Shetland Pony

Color: Roan
Weight: 150 lbs.
Height: 42 inches or 10-2 hands
History: Rusty was raised on a ranch in Orland, CA. When we got Rusty, she was too young to work on the pony ride.
It didn’t take us long to see she had a very sweet disposition, so as soon as she was old enough we let her practice with the other ponies. Now Rusty is one of our most energetic workers.
Shadow
Breed: Welsh Pony

Color: Blue Roan

History: The year 1994 was Shadows first year with us. He is a very strong pony and from the start he positioned himself as one of the leaders in the pony ride crew.
Shadows height and stature are perfect for our older riders and his slow pace is perfect for our little riders. Shadow does it all.
Silver

History: Silver came from our daughter’s ranch in Orland, CA. Our daughter, Ryann, also has ponies (and a lot of other animals). One day we asked Ryann if Silver could come live with us at Trail’s End Ranch. We were very excited when she said yes.
Silver has a lot of energy and loves to run up and down the hills on the ranch.
Smokey

History: Smokey was born on our ranch in Durham, CA. Like his mother Goldie, Smokey has grown to be an important member of our pony ride team.
Smokey loves our new home at Trail’s End Ranch, his favorite hobbies are: eating, eating and an occasional run around the pasture.
Sparky
Breed: Welsh Pony

Color: White

Height: 49 inches or 12-1 hands
History: Sparky came from Santa Paula, CA. Maybe living with the sunshine and the ocean breeze are why Sparky has such an easy going personality.
White ponies are very pretty, but need extra attention. Everyday before work Sparky and his friends Frostie and Angel are the first ponies to need a bath.
Toy

History: Toy is our bundle of energy. He got his name because when he was born, he was so small; he looked like a toy you would win in the carnival.
Toy loves to run and play in the pasture, but his favorite past time is trying to sneak out of the gates.
Velvet

Color: Black
Weight: 525 lbs.
Height: 40 inches or 10 hands
History: Velvet has enjoyed traveling with her friends and the pony ride since 1997.
Like many of the ponies, Velvet has a lot of energy and loves to run and play with her buddies.
Many of our riders like Velvet, because they think she looks like Black Stallion. What do you think?
Cupid
Breed: Welsh Pony

Weight: 700 lbs.
History: Cupid is another one of our Arkansas ponies. The minute we saw her cute speckled color and sweet disposition we knew she would fit right in.
Cupid’s slow walk makes her a great pace setter in the pony ride. And her powerful build can easily carry our largest riders. She is one of a kind pony.
Candy

History: Candy came to us from our daughter Ryann’s ranch in Orland, CA. with her friend Rootbeer. Candy and Rootbeer are always getting into trouble together.
Candy worked with Ryann on her pony ride for a couple of years before coming with us, she fit right in.
Java
Breed: Shetland Pony

Color: Chestnut
Weight: 625 lbs.
History: Java came to us from up north in Oregon. And quickly became best pals with Ginger. In Oregon Java did jumping and riding lessons for children. So he was well qualified to start giving rides at fairs.
Java is always full of energy and ready to play tag or race around the fields at home. But in the pony ride he is one of our most reliable ponies.
Lolly
Breed: Welsh Pony

Weight: 750 lbs.
History: Lolly came to Trail's End Ranch all the way from Clarksville, Arkansas. She grew up giving horseback rides and pulling wagons around a family’s farm.
Lolly’s large body and sweet disposition match that of her friend Cupid’s. But Lolly is much more the miscevious one of the two. Always ready for a game of nip and run.
Rootbeer

Weight: 750 lbs.
History: Rootbeer came over with Candy from our daughter Ryann’s ranch in Orland, CA. She has to work there for a summer before deciding to relocate to Trail’s End Ranch.
Rootbeer and Candy are best friends and are always getting into trouble together. Rootbeer’s only problem is that she likes to eat too much, so she can never make a quick get away.
Ruby

History: Ruby was born on Trail's End Ranch in 2002. Her mom Goldie has been one of our best ponies for several years and we had high expectations for her in the Spring of 2005, when Ruby would be starting to work. She has lived up to all our expectations and more. One top of being such a great size and having a slow walk, she has become an instant star in our pony ride. During the off-season she is one of the ponies that our grandchildren ride around our ranch. Look for Ruby many years and memories to come.
Shorty

History: Shorty is another new rising star at Happy Day Pony Ride. After a trip from Arkansas to our ranch he quickly made himself one of the top ponies in the pasture and in the pony ride. His short stature and calm nature makes him perfect for our younger riders. (Don’t tell him that he is small though, he thinks he is the biggest baddest pony on the ranch.)
